Junior Counselor – Guidelines & Procedures
The Mission of Camp Gan Israel
To provide a safe, fun and uplifting summer day camp experience for Jewish children, where a love for Judaism is taught through joy, care, and meaningful staff-camper connections.
Why am I in camp?
As a Junior Counselor, you’re a vital member of the staff team. You're not just helping—you’re stepping into real responsibility. You support the counselor by helping manage campers, lead activities, and maintain a smooth daily routine.
Junior Counselors are expected to be proactive, reliable, and engaged. Campers will look to you for guidance, support, and fun.
What is my job?
- Actively assist with group management – help maintain order, keep campers focused, and support transitions between activities
- Be hands-on – lead games, help with activities, and support individual campers
- Step in when needed – redirect behavior when appropriate and report serious issues to counselor
- Stay engaged and bring positive energy at all times
What should I do in camp?
- Sign in and out daily at the front desk
- Place your phone in your assigned slot immediately upon arrival
- Be on time every day
- Stay with your assigned bunk unless instructed otherwise
- Keep walkie-talkie on at all times
- Lead with energy, enthusiasm, and kindness
What should I NOT do in camp?
- No phone use during camp hours
- No inappropriate or adult conversations around campers
- No leaving your group without permission
- No entering bathrooms with campers (stand outside only)
- No physical contact beyond appropriate gestures (high five only)
- Do not ignore instructions from staff
What do I do if I have a problem?
Speak to your Counselor or Head Counselor. If needed, speak to Rabbi Yitzchok or Baily. We are here to support you.
